Mines ties with NREL grow stronger through new Alliance leadership
On July 29, 2008, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) selected the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC (ASE) to manage the Golden, Colo. based National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The ASE is equally owned by the Midwest Research Institute (MRI) and Battelle.
“We are truly excited to have the opportunity to continue to manage this great laboratory and to support DOE’s critical mission of developing and deploying innovative, high impact renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies,” said Dr. Dan Arvizu, ASE president and NREL director. Arvizu added, “the Alliance hopes a fortunate byproduct of this mission will be the creation of a renewable energy ‘Silicon Valley,’ emanating from the laboratory, the state of Colorado, and the Front Range, while reaching out to national and international connections for wider impact on clean energy.”
Colorado School of Mines, a member of the new ASE board of directors, is excited about playing a role in helping the ASE and NREL achieve these goals. ASE management of NREL helps further strengthen the ties between Mines and NREL.
“Mines has enjoyed, from the earliest days, a very close working relationship with NREL which has produced some great science and technology. As part of the executive team of ASE we are looking forward to bigger and better things in the critical areas of sustainable energy,” said Dr. John Poate, vice president of research and technology transfer at Mines.
